I have been designing hats since 1988. A woman wearing a hat, passing by on a bus, inspired my first creation.

Recently I began exploring 'toyo', a material with lightweight and flexible qualities, which has inspired my most lively and organic forms.

Each hat begins in the moment by sewing 1/4" toyo braid around and around onto itself. Decisions about shape are made as the hat grows. There are no patterns and no two hats are exactly alike.

Adding fabric draping skills to a shape created this way takes the work to another level, where a functional and beautiful fashion piece becomes an intriguing sculptural object in itself.
