Mia Tyson's interest in clothing design and construction goes back to her maternal grandmother, an expert and self-taught seamstress. While growing up in rural Union County, North Carolina Tyson learned the value and pride that comes from making something well from the best materials that were available at that time and place.

Tyson's previous work in clay reflects her interest in creating a sense of movement within each garment by merging its shape with an original embroidered drawing often incorporated into its surface design. The overall asymmetrical structural lines of her clothing create a focused and streamlined appearance for the garment and the wearer, along with a minimalist effect.
