For the past two years, our themed
'show-within-a-show' exhibitions have been inspiring artists and intriguing
patrons at Paradise City Arts Festivals. This November, we invited our artists
to participate in a special exhibition in the Sculpture Café exploring the many
nuances of the color 'red'.
Red has been an important element in visual expression for thousands of years.
In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy and celebration. Red is the color
of happiness and prosperity in China, and is even used to attract good luck. Red is often the
color worn by brides in the East, while it is the color of mourning in South
Africa. Many national flags incorporate red, possibly related to the warlike aspect of this intense hue.
On a 'red heart' note, the ruby is the traditional fortieth wedding anniversary gift, and in art
red often connotes passion and warmth.

From a potter’s traditional red glaze to the splash of vermilion that leads your eye into
a large canvas, Paradise City artists may use red literally, as a chromatic choice unrelated
to meaning. On the other hand, the symbolic or emotional qualities will surely dominate many
entries.
There is just one prerequisite for the entries in 'red HOT!' - the color red must be an
important aesthetic element in each piece.
