Greg Bodnar creates furniture and sculptural woodwork from his home studio in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, drawing on a lifelong relationship with wood and more than fifty years of experience in carpentry and cabinetry.
Growing up in the woods of New Jersey, Bodnar was building tree forts and crafting bows and arrows by age ten. After entering the carpentry trade in 1976, he spent a decade building houses from foundation to finish before discovering a passion for fine woodworking. In 1986, he studied furniture design and construction at the Leeds Design Workshops in Easthampton under English master cabinetmaker David Powell, followed by an apprenticeship with renowned cabinetmaker Frank Klausz.
“What can I say? I have a love affair with wood,” Bodnar says. That connection continues to guide his work today. While much of his practice centers on custom cabinetry and furniture, he also creates sculptural pieces that often incorporate carved elements. Remarkably, “ninety percent of my work is created using hand tools only, no power tools,” a choice rooted in his belief that “it’s all about getting close to your material.”
Working from his home workshop, Bodnar sees himself as part of a long tradition of hand-tool craftsmanship. “Out of my deep reverence for my material, I try to do the best of my ability,” he says. His award-winning work reflects a deep respect for both the craft and the wood itself.
