Using techniques and training in classical realism, I bring elements of the material world together in still life. Like a puppet show, these things come alive, creating drama in thought provoking scenarios. Still life becomes a gateway into other worlds in art, culture, nature and imagination. Gathering together images to evoke comedy, absurdity, tragedy, I try to process our beautiful world in a unique and meaningful way.
My Process
I work in oil on canvas or board, using classical techniques and pigments that have been used for centuries. I have been studying these methods since my first oil painting class when I was twelve. I start with an idea and composition in a pencil sketch, and when I am happy with it I transfer the image to the canvas, or board, which has been primed and a background wash has been applied. My process begins in darks and highlights, then adding color. I am always learning, bringing my ideas to life.
