Welcome to Dana Volungis Art, where the boundaries of realism and serenity blur. As a self-taught oil painter based in New England, I create vibrant, evocative works guided by the concept of Exhilarating Tranquility. My art captures the dynamic energy of nature—the intricate, shifting interplay of light, water, and rich surface texture—to bring a profound sense of peace and quiet wonder into your space. My artistic journey builds on a 25-year career as a senior retail display designer in Deerfield, Massachusetts. In that fast-paced world, I spent decades honing my mastery of color theory, three-dimensional spatial composition, and visual storytelling. Today, I translate that deep structural foundation onto canvas, channeling a passion for natural beauty into immersive oil paintings. Inspired by coastal landscapes, moving water, and quiet moments, my work offers an experience—a symphony of movement and reflection designed to awaken the senses and soothe the soul. Each brushstroke is applied with intention, inviting you to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the fleeting beauty in every moment. My paintings have been featured in juried regional exhibitions and are held in private collections across the country. I am thrilled to share my unique perspective with you, and I hope my artwork brings a lasting sense of Exhilarating Tranquility into your life and home.
My Process
Your creative process balances structural precision with atmospheric depth. You begin by mapping compositions onto canvas using a grid and diagonal line methodology for exact proportion. Working in oils, you build luminosity through meticulous glazing layers—capturing poetic realism, ambient light, and the fluid transparency of water reflections. The process concludes with fine craftsmanship: building custom black maple floating box frames, hand-finished with an oil-based satin gel stain that completes the work.
