Ann Brauer

When I was born, my grandmother made me a postage stamp quilt of feed sack cloth which I slept under for years always finding new designs she had carefully included. This began my life long love of fabric and design. My quilts explore the open sky of the farm where I grew up, the changing colors of the hills where I live and my fascination with the promise of the beach. In each quilt I am trying to capture a specific mood and time. Each quilt I make is different and created by carefully selecting small strips of cotton fabric and adding them one at a time to the piece sewing through the cotton batting onto the back. Then I intensely machine quilt the work to give it even more substance and texture so that the quilt reads as a whole from a distance and includes many stories to meditate on as the viewer ponders the piece. Attention to detail and technique is important to me. For the last 45 years I have been supporting myself playing with fabric and color to create quilts that explore landscapes of my imagination. My work is in many public and private collections including the Museum of Art + Design in NYC, the Federal District Court House in Springfield, and the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston. My studio is in the Village of Shelburne Falls and is open to the public. I love doing custom work and can discuss making a quilt for that special location in the size and colors that you need.
