Phil Rose creates sculptural work that brings wood and glass together, using the contrasting qualities of the two materials to explore change, resilience, connection, and hope. Rose began working in wood in 2007, initially through woodturning. His practice later expanded into fused and flameworked glass, gradually moving away from functional forms toward sculpture. Today, wood often provides structure, history, and permanence in his work, while glass introduces light, color, movement, and transformation. His sculptures frequently begin with the character already present in a piece of wood—a natural edge, void, crack, grain pattern, or unexpected form. Rather than treating these as defects to overcome, Rose incorporates them into the visual language of the finished work. Glass elements are developed in response, creating relationships between materials that could not exist in either medium alone. Rose lives and works in Sodus, New York.

My Process

My work begins with an idea and a period of imagining—sketching, visualizing and exploring forms before committing to materials. From there, the process becomes a conversation with wood and glass. Grain, natural edges, voids and cracks influence the developing form, while glass is fused, kiln-formed or flameworked in response. I move back and forth between design and making, carving, burning, texturing and reshaping as the materials reveal new possibilities. The finished sculpture is rarely a literal execution of the first idea.
