I have been painting the landscape for over thirty years. After earning two masters degrees in art, I spent the first 20 years of my career working in oils. I did plein air work for the 1st ten years often hiking miles with massive canvases to work on site. For the next ten years I explored the landscape in my studio even working with dancers to push my work into new places, Thirteen years ago I was going through some serious health issues and switched to pastels, which I thought would be temporary. But I absolutely fell in love with the medium. I work in both now, but pastels are what I work in every day. They are pure magic!
My Process
Working in soft pastels, I often have no idea what draws me to work from a particular image until I have worked from it several times. Once the “why” becomes clear, I dig in and go after the magic that lies below the surface. The visual connection to the original source material becomes lost in the translation as the image departs from the visual and delves into all of the senses. I am not interested in conveying a specific moment in time or place, but rather the essence of what makes that place magical.
