Maura Bordes Cronin is an artist and surface designer based in Providence, Rhode Island. Her work begins with a fascination with place—coastlines, weathered surfaces, shifting water, natural forms, and marks left by time and movement. Working primarily with dye, seaweed paste, and potato or pea resist processes, she translates these observations into richly layered surfaces that become either garments or large-scale fabric panels. She works directly on the cloth, painting with dye paste by hand and embracing the visceral nature of the process—the uneven edges, variations, and unexpected marks that come from working without striving for perfection. Texture, repetition, irregularity, and the interaction of color are central to her work, allowing the character of a place or surface to emerge without illustrating it literally. Whether worn on the body, hung on a wall, or experienced within a space, her work explores how cloth can carry a sense of landscape, memory, and place.

My Process

My process begins with looking—at water, weathered surfaces, shifting light, and marks left by time and movement. I often start with a photograph, then watercolors, to explore color, shape, and texture. In the studio, I heat starch pastes and apply them directly to cloth to create a resist. Once dry, I mix dyes with seaweed paste and paint directly onto the fabric. After washing, the finished cloth becomes a garment, fabric panel, or interior piece, each shaped by both intention and unpredictability.
