Hetty Friedman

Born in Brooklyn, Hetty fell in love with weaving at an arts camp in 1966 and has never looked back. Her background includes an MFA in Visual Design and an MBA. Hetty’s inspirations are Joseph and Annie Albers, the Bauhaus artists, Guatemalan indigenous weavers, Matisse, and Picasso. She takes risks combining strong and unusual colors. Her work is woven on a 4 harness Le Clerc, an 8 harness Macomber and a Schacht Baby Wolf 8 harness loom in her Newton Ctr, MA studio. Utilizing her expertise in a partnership with a Fair-Trade weavers’ coop, she travels to Guatemala to teach Maya back-strap weavers techniques and design. Her project, Crafts for a Cause, supports organizations working with issues pertaining to women and girls in communities near and far. You can find her work in shops, galleries and museums.
